about
Trayer Tryon & Uppy’s original version of “AM” plays like a smooth and surreal glide through the universe. With its warm, sleek synths and steady kick drum, an endless bed of energy is laid out with Uppy’s vocals striding delicately on top. But Uppy’s performance, despite being intoxicating, is also demanding: “Shake me to wake up / Kiss me on the forehead / Tell me the lie that everything is going to be fine,” she orders. And if one allows themselves to sink into the recording, it does seem as though things are fine after all.
With deathscott’s new remix, the listener instead finds themselves rapidly warping between planets of varying climates and conditions. At first, there are only flecks of cosmic dust, but in the blink of an eye there are blasts of gamma rays, pillars of dark matter, and swirling black holes floating throughout the stereo field. Time stops and starts at random. This journey eventually arrives at a fully-formed family of planets, with the listener’s vessel suddenly placed on the original version’s path. From there, things drift forward in a manner best measured in light years.
